For years, we’ve been told stress is all in the mind.
But new research suggests your body might be the real source of the problem, more specifically your hydration levels.
Daniel Kashi, PhD, and a team of scientists from Liverpool John Moores University recently discovered something that could reshape how we understand stress and anxiety.
A new study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that staying properly hydrated can help your body handle stress better, reduce cortisol (your main stress hormone), and even improve long-term health markers like heart function and mood regulation.
And while that might sound simple, the consequences are massive.
People who don’t drink enough fluids during the day have significantly higher stress hormone (cortisol) levels even when they don’t feel stressed.
The Surprising Reason Hydration Affects Stress So Deeply
Researchers split participants into two groups: people who drank around 2L a day, and another who drank less than 1.5L. Both groups took part in a simulated 'stress test' (like a job interview).
All participants felt some nerves and had an increased heart rate during the test, but only the under-hydrated group had a major spike in cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone.
In other words, their bodies went into 'fight or flight' mode... just because they were a bit dehydrated.
Dr. Kashi explains that when your body senses even mild dehydration, it releases a hormone called vasopressin which helps your body hold on to water.
But it also signals your brain’s stress centre (the hypothalamus) to release more cortisol.
"Anxiety often presents with a sensation of the heart racing and sometimes feeling weak or light headed," Sharon Green, MD, assistant professor of clinical medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center says.
"Dehydration causes the heart to beat faster to pump the blood through the body because the volume of blood is decreased. The brain can perceive this rapid heart rate as an 'anxious' signal."
When this happens, “the brain is recognising dehydration as a threat,” says Hillary Ammon, PsyD, a clinical psychologist at the Center for Anxiety & Women’s Emotional Wellness.
In short, dehydration tricks your body into thinking it’s under threat; and that raises stress levels, heart rate, and fatigue even on calm days.
You might think you’re anxious, but your body could be reacting to dehydration.

Why Just Drinking More Water Isn’t Always the Answer
You’d think the solution is simple, just drink more water. But here's the problem... water alone often doesn’t fully hydrate you.
When you lose fluids (from caffeine, heat, exercise, or just being busy), you also lose electrolytes (minerals like sodium, magnesium, and potassium) that help your body absorb water.
Water alone doesn’t contain the electrolytes your body needs to actually retain hydration. Without them, the water you drink often passes right through you.
Electrolytes act like tiny keys that help your body lock in hydration. When they’re missing, your cells don’t rehydrate fully, no matter how much water you drink.
That’s why so many people still feel tired, foggy, or stressed even when they’re drinking 'enough'.
